Chapter Twelve

Max

Max walked with Clara into the reception area at Roman and Bex’s wedding. Peyton was just ahead of him, practically floating. He could tell just by watching her during the ceremony that she had loved every minute of it.

All of the seven of the bridesmaids were wearing dresses with the same slate blue fabric, but each in a style all their own. None of them stood out the way Peyton did, though, or looked as amazing in that color. Hers had a high neckline in the front, plunged in the back, and was fitted to just past her hips before it flared, the silky fabric falling in the perfect waves, showing off her incredible legs. He was having the hardest time keeping his eyes off her.

The wedding ceremony had been nice. Roman looked like the happiest man who had ever lived, and Max had actually imagined himself standing at the front of a crowd of his closest family and friends, about to be married to Peyton, looking every bit as thrilled. It surprised him how much the thought hadn’t freaked him out.

Peyton had walked up the aisle with the other bridesmaids and groomsmen, arm-in-arm with one of Roman’s friends, and then went to stand at the front, facing the guests. And then Bex had come in, escorted by her dad, and he went on imagining again what it would be like if it was Peyton walking up that aisle, looking so thrilled about their future together.

Bex and Roman had written their own vows, and he wasn’t ashamed to admit that he might have teared up a little. Peyton’s eyes had found his, and the look she gave him made his heart race and swell and maybe even melt a bit. He wondered if she was possibly picturing the same thing he was.

Then Clara had reached for his hand and gave it a squeeze and reminded him that neither of them was there with each other and that he shouldn’t be imagining a life with Peyton when he had a date by his side. He shouldn’t have been thinking of her at all. Peyton’s eyes had immediately shifted to David’s, and she gave him a smile.

Now, she was walking into the elegant reception room, arm-in-arm with David, and Max was walking in, arm-in-arm with Clara. It was a clear reminder that things were the way they always were. He was in love with Peyton and she didn’t know. He was just moving through life with her as a best friend and not as a partner.

“Look how beautiful everything is,” Peyton said as she motioned to all the fancy tables and place settings and chairs with bows tied around them. The big long table where Bex and Roman would sit and where her four sisters, his two brothers, two groomsmen, and both of their parents were already taking their seats was long and at the top of the room, facing everyone. The rest of the tables were circular and went along the other three sides of the room, leaving the middle open for dancing.
